The University of Groningen invited all alumni to come for a ‘trip down memory lane’, in the weekend of 13 to 15 June 2014.
The alumni weekend festivities began already on Friday evening at one of the student associations (those which have opened their doors to alumni), at the exhibition 400 years of science in the Aa-church (Aa-kerk) or ‘just like old times’ in the city. Or of course, a combination of these.
Welcoming and lunch
Saturday there was an extended program. It began at 11:00 on the Broerplein, followed by a joint lunch in the city center, grouped by faculty; a large quantity of beautifully decorated tables around the Vismarkt and Broerplein.
After the lunch it was possible for example to go for short meetings with study mates, go for a tour or to visit a popular lecture hall. Afterwards there was time to go watch the big rowing event, the Bommenb∞trace, in the city center of Groningen. Furthermore there were three exhibitions to go see; in the University Museum, The Aa-church (Aa-kerk) and the Groninger Museum. The afternoon closed with a drink on the Grote Markt.
The ‘Gift for Infinity’ dinner took place in the Martini Church (Martinikerk) (photos of the dinner you will see here), whilst elsewhere in the city ‘Gift for Infinity’ menus were served.
Parade and closing party
Saturday evening there was a large procession of students and inhabitants of Groningen: the parade of the Masquerade – Move it. This finished with a bang through a closing party for everyone on the Grote Markt and the Vismarkt (8.30 p.m. - 01.00 a.m.). A party with plenty of old and new music and an explosive final note of the event.
On Sunday, alumni could have a look at their former culture, sports association or of course visit Aletta the Musical in the Stadsschouwburg.
Welcoming ceremony Rijksmuseum Amsterdam
For all of our alumni living abroad, we offered an extra program prior to the Alumni Weekend: a welcoming ceremony in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam on Thursday 12 June 2014.
